HRD Ministry Is Now Ministry Of Education, Gets Approval From Ramnath Kovind

The change on behalf of the Indian Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) as Minister of Education was approved on Monday by President Ram Nath Kovind, an official notice said.

The adjustment in the name was one of the primary suggestions for the draft of the new NEP, which the Union’s Cabinet also cleared up last month.

The President nodded to change the name of the MHRD to the Ministry of Education a gazette notification published on Monday night.

The heading of the Development Department of Human Resources is replaced by the education ministry, it says.

In 1985, during the tenure of then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the Ministry of Education was re-named HRD Ministry. The NEP was launched the following year and was subsequently amended in 1992.

The first minister of the HRD in the Rajiv Gandhi cabinet became V Narasimha Rao.

A panel led by Kasturirangan, former President of ISRO, who was responsible for the work of the NEP, initially suggested changing the ministry ‘s name again.

Ram Bahadur Ray, President of the Indira Gandhi National Arts Center and President of the Joint Organizing Committee of the Economic Leadership for Education for the Resurgence Conference (Joint Organizing Board) also proposed this idea in 2018.
